The latest statistics on Programme Budgets produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 22 April 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Expenditure Programme Budgets include data for Local Health Boards (LHBs) in Wales and Health Commission Wales (HCW) for the financial years 2005-06 to 2008-09. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 April 2009.

Key points for the 2009 financial year are:

  • The largest single programme budget category is spending on mental health problems, which amounted to 11.6% of the total.
  • 11.4% of expenditure overall was commissioned by the specialist agency Health Commission Wales. HCW’s largest expenditure was on circulation problems, where it amounted to £98.1 million or 20.4% of the Wales spend.
  • Spending per head of the population ranged from £6.20 on renal problems to £196.60 on mental health problems.
