The latest National Statistics on NHS Staff Vacancies produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 April 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Staff Vacancies include data for Wales as at 30 September 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 13 October 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

At 30 September:

  • 170 NHS posts had been vacant for three months or more. This represents a 24 per cent decrease on the 224 vacancies reported six months earlier.
  • These vacancies account for 0.3 per cent of all NHS posts, the same percentage as six months earlier and slightly lower than 0.4 per cent a year ago.

The vacancies in different staff groups were as follows:

  • 25 (1.0 per cent of posts) consultant posts – a slight decrease from 26 (1.1 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 36 (0.2 per cent of posts) qualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff - a slight increase from 33 (0.2 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 17 (0.4 per cent of posts) qualified allied health professional staff - a slight increase from 15 (0.3 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 6 (0.3 per cent of posts) qualified scientific and technical staff - a decrease from 11 (0.4 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 5 (0.2 per cent of posts) qualified healthcare scientists – a slight increase from 4 (0.2 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 81 in other staff groups – a decrease of 56 (41 per cent) compared with six months earlier.
