NHS Direct Wales Update, Quarter Ending March 2010

The latest statistics on calls to NHS Direct Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 5 May 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of March 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 3 February 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 101,000 calls were offered to NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period January to March 2010. This is a 21 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 17 per cent rise on the January to March quarter in 2008-09.
  • 87,100 calls were answered by NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period January to March 2010. This is a 20 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 8 per cent rise on the January to March quarter in 2008-09.
  • During the 12-month period to March 2010, 478,900 calls were offered to the service; a rise of 40 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period. 404,700 calls were answered by the service; a rise of 29 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period.
  • During the three-month period to March 2010, NHS Direct Wales answered more than 1,800 calls (out of almost 2,200 calls offered) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh. This is a fall of 7 per cent on the same quarter in 2008-09 and accounted for approximately 2 per cent of all calls answered.
  • 58,200 calls were offered to the 0845 service and 42,800 calls to other NHS Direct Wales services, including GP Out of Hours services.
