The latest statistics on admission of patients to mental health facilities in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics include data up to 31 March 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 October 2008.

Changes to the KP90 data collection form and guidance were made for 2008-09 to take into account changes to the Mental Health Act 1983 made by the Mental Health Act 2007. These changes may affect comparisons with data for previous years.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2008-09 there were 11,101 admissions (excluding place of safety detentions) to mental health facilities in Wales, up from 10,854 in 2007-08.
  • 99 per cent of the admissions in 2008-09 were to NHS facilities in Wales, with the remainder admitted to independent hospitals.
  • 1,673 were admitted in 2008-09 under the Mental Health Act 1983 (excluding place of safety detentions) and other legislation compared with 1,467 in 2007-08.
  • In 2008-09 reported place of safety detentions increased to 587 from 367 in 2007-08.
  • Civil (Part II) detentions accounted for 94 per cent of formal admissions (excluding place of safety detentions) with just under two thirds of these (61 per cent) being admitted for assessment, with or without treatment (Section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983).
  • In 2008-09 there were 165 patients subject to supervised community treatment (SCT), including 5 for whom an independent hospital was responsible. Of this total, 117 were male and 48 were female.
  • Of the 165 uses of SCT during the year there were 11 recalls to hospital, 8 revocations and 7 discharges.
