NHS Direct Wales Update, Quarter Ending June 2010

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of June 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 5 May 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

• 93,200 calls were offered to NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period April to June 2010. This is an 8 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 12 per cent fall on the April to June quarter in 2009-10.
• 83,200 calls were answered by NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period April to June 2010. This is a 5 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 10 per cent fall on the April to June quarter in 2009-10.
• During the 12-month period to June 2010, 466,200 calls were offered to the service; a rise of 28 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period. 395,400 calls were answered by the service; a rise of 20 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period.
• During the three-month period to June 2010, NHS Direct Wales answered more than 1,900 calls (out of almost 2,200 calls offered) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh. This is a rise of 2 per cent on the same quarter in 2009-10 and accounted for approximately 2 per cent of all calls answered.
• 56,500 calls were offered to the 0845 service and 36,700 calls to other NHS Direct Wales services, including GP Out of Hours services.
