The latest National Statistics on NHS General Dental Services produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 18 August 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

Activity between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010:

  • A total of 5.0 million Units of Dental Activity (UDA) were carried out, representing 2.3 million individual NHS dental courses of treatment (CoT) a decrease of 0.7 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively since 2008-09.
  • The highest proportion of CoTs (53.1 per cent) was within Band 1 (routine examinations, scaling and diagnostic procedures).
  • Band 2 treatments (fillings and extractions) had the largest proportion of UDAs with 41.5 per cent of the total in the year.
  • The total number of Units of Orthodontic Activity (UOAs) credited during 2009-10 in Wales was 208,400.

Patients treated

  • 1.7 million patients were recorded as having been treated in the 24 months before 31 March 2010, amounting to 55.3 per cent of the population (up from 55.0 per cent in 2008-09). 65.6 per cent of the child (under 18 years) (down from 66.0 per cent in 2008-09) and 52.6 per cent of the adult population (18 years or over) (up from 52.0 per cent in 2008-09) were treated in the previous 24 months.

Workforce in the year ending 31 March 2010:

  • There were 1,310 dentists with NHS activity recorded on FP17 forms, an increase of 17 (1.3 per cent) since 2008-09.
  • There were 4.4 dentists per 10,000 population.

Patient charges between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010:

  • 40.0 per cent of all CoTs were for paying adults, the total patient charge for which amounted to £26.9 million a decrease of 2.3 per cent since 2008-09.
