The latest National Statistics on NHS Staff Vacancies produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26 August 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Staff Vacancies include data for Wales as at 31 March 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 April 2010.

At 31 March:

  • 243 NHS posts had been vacant for three months or more. This represents a 43 per cent increase on the 170 vacancies reported six months earlier.
  • These vacancies account for 0.4 per cent of all NHS posts, slightly higher than 0.3 per cent six months earlier and 0.3 per cent a year ago.

The vacancies in different staff groups were as follows:

  • 39 (1.5 per cent of posts) consultant posts – an increase from 25 (1.0 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 65 (0.3 per cent of posts) qualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff – an increase from 36 (0.2 per cent of posts) six months earlier.
  • 139 in other staff groups – an increase of 30 (27 per cent) compared with six months earlier.
