The latest National Statistics on social services staff produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 13 October 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The statistics include numbers of social services staff employed by local authorities in Wales at 31 March 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 14 October 2009.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • 27,000 staff work in social services departments, comprising 15,600 (58 per cent) part-time staff and 11,500 (42 per cent) full-time staff.
  • The whole-time equivalent (WTE) number of staff employed was 20,100, a decrease of 47 from 31 March 2009.
  • 15,100 staff held a required or recommended qualification. This represented 60 per cent of the total number of staff.
  • There were 4,300 Welsh speaking staff, meaning those who are able to use the language to conduct their business. This represented 17 per cent of the total number of staff.
