The latest statistics on NHS beds and their use produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 28 October 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS beds include data for the period up to the end of March 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 14 January 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

Between 2008-09 and 2009-10:

  • The total number of NHS beds (1) fell by 248 (2 per cent) to 12,868.
  • The number of beds in acute and geriatric specialties fell by 214 (2 per cent) to 10,072.

Over the ten years from 1999-00 to 2009-10:

  • The number of NHS beds in total fell by 1,855 (13 per cent).
  • The number of beds in acute and geriatric specialties fell by 1,098 (10 per cent).
  • Beds in the mental health sector fell by 721 (25 per cent) to 2,207.
  • The percentage occupancy increased from 80.0 to 81.2 per cent.
  • Annual throughput (number of patients treated per bed) increased from 35.0 to 39.7.
  • The average duration of stay decreased from 8.3 to 7.5 days.

Revision note

Note added 28 March 2013: There have been some minor revisions to 2009-10 and 2011-12 data since the release (SDR 189/2012 “NHS Beds, 2011-12”) was initially published. Data in SDR 189/2012 does not show the revisions that have been made. Please see SDR 49/2013 “Additional Data on NHS Beds, 2011-12” for the revised 2009-10 and 2011-12 data, information on why the revisions have been made and their impact.
