NHS Direct Wales Update, Quarter Ending September 2010

The latest statistics on calls to NHS Direct Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 3 November 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of September 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 4 August 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 83,400 calls were offered to NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period July to September 2010. This is an 11 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 42 per cent fall on the July to September quarter in 2009-10.
  • 77,700 calls were answered by NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period July to September 2010. This is a 7 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 33 per cent fall on the July to September quarter in 2009-10.
  • During the 12-month period to September 2010, 405,300 calls were offered to the service; a fall of 5 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period. 356,600 calls were answered by the service; a fall of 4 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period.
  • During the three-month period to September 2010, NHS Direct Wales answered almost 2,000 calls (out of almost 2,300 calls offered) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh. This is a fall of 1 per cent on the same quarter in 2009-10 and accounted for approximately 3 per cent of all calls answered.
  • 49,300 calls were offered to the 0845 service and 34,200 calls to other NHS Direct Wales services, including GP Out of Hours services.
