The latest National Statistics on teenage conceptions produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 16 December 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on teenage conceptions include data for England and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 24 November 2009.

The key points from the bulletin are:

  • Conception rates for the under 16, under 18 and under 20 age groups have remained at similar levels since 2001.
  • The conception rate for girls aged under 18 decreased from 44.9 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in 2007 to 44.3 in 2008.
  • Within Wales, rates for girls aged under 18 varied considerably from 66.4 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in Merthyr Tydfil Unitary Authority to 31.8 in Ceredigion Unitary Authority (2006-2008 average).
  • In 2008 the percentage of conceptions in Wales terminated by abortion was 57 per cent for the under 16s, 44 per cent for the under 18s and 38 per cent for the under 20s. The percentage for women of all ages was 21 per cent.
