A National Statistics bulletin on excess winter deaths in Wales, produced by the Welsh Assembly Government was released on 12 January 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on excess winter deaths include data for Wales and England for the period up to the winter of 2009-10. The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 12 January 2010 and is based on statistics released by the ONS on 23 November 2010.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • Despite the cold winter of 2009/10, levels of excess winter deaths were not as high as the previous year.
  • There were provisionally around 1,700 excess winter deaths in Wales in winter 2009/10, a decrease of 31 per cent compared with the previous winter (2,470 excess winter deaths).
  • In winter 2009/10, 82 per cent of excess winter deaths involved people aged 75 or over.
  • The highest rates of excess winter deaths relate to people aged 85 or over. In winter 2009/10 the rate was 0.8 per 10,000 population for those aged 0-64 but increased to 22 per 10,000 for those aged 75-84 and 135 per 10,000 for those aged 85 or over.
  • The number of deaths in Wales in winter 2009/10 was provisionally 18 per cent higher than the average non-winter deaths, down from 25 per cent in the previous winter.
