NHS Direct Wales Update, Quarter Ending December 2010

The latest statistics on calls to NHS Direct Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 2 February 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of December 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 3 November 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 97,300 calls were offered to NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period October to December 2010. This is a 17 per cent rise since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 24 per cent fall on the October to December quarter in 2009-10.
  • 74,900 calls were answered by NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period October to December 2010. This is a 4 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 31 per cent fall on the October to December quarter in 2009-10.
  • During the 12-month period to December 2010, 375,000 calls were offered to the service; a fall of 19 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period. 322,900 calls were answered by the service; a fall of 19 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period.
  • During the three-month period to December 2010, NHS Direct Wales answered more than 2,100 calls (out of more than 2,600 calls offered) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh. This is a rise of 4 per cent on the same quarter in 2009-10 and accounted for approximately 3 per cent of all calls answered.
  • 61,200 calls were offered to the 0845 service and 36,100 calls to other NHS Direct Wales services, including GP Out of Hours services.
