The latest National Statistics on births and infant mortality produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 9th March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on births and infant mortality include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2009. The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 30th March 2010.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • There were 34,937 live births to Welsh residents.
  • The total fertility rate was an average of 1.93 children per woman.
  • 57 per cent of live births were outside marriage, although most of these were jointly registered by both parents.
  • There were 180 stillbirths.
  • There were 166 deaths of infants under 1 year, equivalent to an infant mortality rate of 4.8 per thousand live births.
