The latest statistics on Programme Budgets produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on NHS Expenditure Programme Budgets include data for Local Health Boards (LHBs) in Wales and Health Commission Wales (HCW) for the financial years 2005-06 to 2009-10. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 22 April 2010.

Key Points for 2009-10

  • Total expenditure for all programme budget categories was £5,231 million or £1,744 per head of the population. Expenditure in 2009-10 was 3.4 per cent higher than expenditure in 2008-09.
  • The largest single programme budget category was spending on mental health problems, which amounted to 11.6 per cent of the total.
  • 11.6 per cent of expenditure overall was commissioned by the specialist agency Health Commission Wales (HCW). HCW’s largest expenditures were on circulation problems, where it funded £98.9 million (22 per cent of the Wales spend) and trauma including burns and injuries (£97.5 million or 26 per cent of the Wales spend).
  • Spending per head of the population ranged from £5.9 on renal problems to £202.5 on mental health problems.
