NHS Direct Wales Update, Quarter Ending March 2011

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of March 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 2 February 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

• 94,700 calls were offered to NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period January to March 2011. This is a 3 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 6 per cent fall on the January – March quarter in 2009-10.
• 73,200 calls were answered by NHS Direct Wales during the three-month period January – March 2011. This is a 2 per cent fall since the previous quarter. A year-on-year comparison shows a 16 per cent fall on the January to March quarter in 2009-10.
• During the 12-month period to March 2011, 368,600 calls were offered to the service; a fall of 23 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period. 309,000 calls were answered by the service; a fall of 24 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period.
• During the three-month period to March  2011, NHS Direct Wales answered more than 2,000 calls (out of more than 3,100 calls offered) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh. This is a rise of 12 per cent on the same quarter in 2009-10 and accounted for approximately 3 per cent of all calls answered.
• 61,100 calls were offered to the 0845 service and 33,600 calls to other NHS Direct Wales services, including GP Out of Hours services.
