The latest statistics on Ophthalmic Statistics in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26 May 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics include data on numbers of sight tests paid for by the NHS and numbers of opticians. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 13 July 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

Sight tests paid for by the NHS in 2010-11:

  • 742,550 sight tests were paid for by the NHS, a 1.1 per cent increase on the previous year.
  • 50 per cent of sight tests paid for by the NHS were for people aged 60 or over.

Workforce and Premises - December 2010:

  • There were 756 practitioners carrying out sight tests paid for by the NHS, 45 more than the previous year and a 26 per cent increase since December 2000.
