The latest experimental statistics on sickness absence in the NHS produced by the Welsh Government were released on 30 August 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on sickness absence include Welsh data for the period up to the end of March 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 17 May 2011.

Key results for the quarter ending March 2011

  • The sickness absence rate was 5.2 per cent, slightly lower than the 5.3 per cent for the same period in 2010.
  • Of the 7 Local Health Boards (LHBs) and 3 NHS Trusts, the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust had the highest sickness absence rate (7.2 per cent) and Public Health Wales NHS Trust had the lowest rate (3.4 per cent).
  • Of the 6 staff groups, the highest sickness absence rates were in the ambulance (7.3 per cent) and healthcare assistant and support worker (7.0 per cent) staff groups.
  • The lowest sickness absence rate was in the medical and dental staff group (1.5 per cent).
