The latest National Statistics on social services staff produced by the Welsh Government were released on 12 October 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The statistics include numbers of social services staff employed by local authorities in Wales at 31 March 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 13 October 2010.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • 26,100 staff are directly employed by social services departments, comprising 14,700 (56 per cent) part-time staff and 11,400 (44 per cent) full-time staff.
  • The whole-time equivalent (WTE) number of directly employed staff decreased by 587 from 31 March 2010 and now stands at 19,500 (its lowest level since 2005).
  • 15,700 staff held a required or recommended qualification. This represented 64 per cent of the total number of staff compared to 40 per cent in 2006.
  • There were 4,300 Welsh speaking staff, meaning those who are able to use the language to conduct their business. This represented 18 per cent of the total number of staff.
