The latest National Statistics on General Pharmaceutical Services produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26 October 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics include the number of pharmacies, prescriptions dispensed and pharmaceutical services offered in Wales for the period up to the end of March 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 November 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 708 community pharmacies and 5 appliance contractors in Wales on 31 March 2011. There is little change in the overall total of community pharmacies and the proportion of community pharmacies that are independents stayed the same.
  • There was 1 opening and no closures of community pharmacies.
  • 129,337 Medicine use reviews were provided by community pharmacies, up by 20 per cent from 2009-10.
  • 65.2 million prescription items were dispensed by community pharmacies, up by 3.2 per cent from 2009-10.
