The latest National Statistics on fostering and adoption intermediary services, produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26 October 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The statistics on fostering and adoption intermediary services include data for Wales for the period up to the end of March 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 October 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 74 new private fostering arrangements started during the year, compared to 100 in the previous year.
  • 78 per cent of the children whose private fostering arrangement began in the year were born in the UK and 22 per cent in other countries. 81 per cent were aged 10 or over at 31 March 2011.
  • 76 children received an initial visit during the year, of which 74 per cent were within 7 days of the beginning of the fostering arrangement.
  • At 31 March 2011, there were 3,094 foster care settings in Wales for children looked after by local authorities.
  • In 2010-11, local authorities dealt with 170 new applications for adoption intermediary services from people adopted before 12 November 1975 and there were 382 cases open at the end of the year.
