The latest statistics on patients in mental health hospitals and units in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 26 October 2011.

Statistics include data as at 31 March 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 23 November 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

Patients resident in hospitals and units for people with a mental illness in Wales:

  • The number of patients had fallen by 421 (19 per cent) since 2001 to 1,764 and by 3 per cent since 2010.
  • 20 per cent of patients were in hospitals with more than 100 patients compared to 36 per cent in 2001.
  • 594 patients (34 per cent of patients) were detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation compared with 442 patients (20 per cent) in 2001.
  • There were fewer female patients than males (843 female, 921 male) and they tended to be older (55 per cent of female patients were aged 65 or over compared with 40 per cent of males).

Patients resident in hospitals and units for people with a learning disability in Wales:

  • The number of patients had fallen by 210 (64 per cent) since 2001 to 118 but increased by 8 from 2010.
  • The number of patients who had been resident for 2 years or more was 73, a decrease of 137 or 65 per cent since 2001.
  • There were 41 female patients and 77 male patients compared to 125 and 203 respectively in 2001. There were 31 patients (26 per cent of the total) detained under the Mental Heath Act 1983 and other legislation, an increase of 10 from 2010.
