NHS Direct Wales Update, Quarter Ending September 2011

The latest statistics on calls to NHS Direct Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 2 November 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of September 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 3 August 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 76,200 calls were offered, 9 per cent down on the July to September quarter in 2010;
  • 59,900 calls were answered, 23 per cent down on the July to September quarter in 2010;
  • Almost 10,100 calls were transferred to NHS Direct Wales, from the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, for clinical triage;
  • 1,100 calls were answered (out of 1,900 offered) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh (around 2 per cent of all calls answered);
  • 213,100 visits were made to the NHS Direct Wales website, 60 per cent up on the July to September quarter in 2010; and
  • 719 on-line enquiries were made to the web-based enquiry service, more than double the number (348) in the July to September quarter in 2010.
