The latest National Statistics on NHS community contraceptive service in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 16 November 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on community contraceptive services in Wales include data for the year ended 31 March 2011.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 15 December 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • just over 45,000 women and almost 4,200 men attended clinics for contraceptive services;
  • more than a third (37%) of women attending clinics were under 20 years old;
  • 43% of the women attending clinics chose oral contraception, 25% chose injectables and implants, with 21% choosing male condoms;
  • only 7.5% of the female population in Wales aged between 13 and 44 attend community contraception clinics.
