The latest National Statistics on teenage conceptions produced by the Welsh Government were released on 29 November 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on teenage conceptions include data for England and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 16 December 2010.

Following the review of conception statistics by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) this bulletin will in future be published in February/March each year after the release of the final statistics by ONS.

The conception rate:

  • for girls aged under 16 decreased from 8.3 per thousand girls aged 13-15 in 2008 to 7.3 in 2009.
  • for girls aged under 18 decreased from 44.3 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in 2008 to 40.1 in 2009.
  • for females aged under 20 decreased from 64.4 per thousand females aged 15-19 in 2008 to 61.0 in 2009.
  • Within Wales, rates for girls aged under 18 varied considerably from 67.8 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in Merthyr Tydfil to 28.2 in Monmouthshire (2007-2009 average).
  • In 2009 the percentage of conceptions in Wales terminated by abortion was 54 per cent for the under 16s, 45 per cent for the under 18s and 36 per cent for the under 20s. The percentage for women of all ages was 20 per cent.
