Births and Infant Mortality Statistics, 2010

The latest National Statistics on births and infant mortality produced by the Welsh Government were released on 28 February 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on births and infant mortality include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2010. The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 9th March 2011.

In 2010:

  • There were 35,952 live births to Welsh residents, the largest number in a year since 1993.
  • Fertility rates have generally been rising since the early 2000s with the average number of children per woman, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR), standing at 1.98.
  • 58 per cent of live births in 2010 were outside marriage, although most of these were jointly registered by both parents.
  • The stillbirth rate has fluctuated during the 2000s between 4.6 and 5.4 per 1,000 total births.
  • Although the rates fluctuate from year to year, generally during the 2000s infant mortality rates have fallen; in 2010 the infant mortality rate stood at 4.0 per thousand live births.
