The latest National Statistics on the ambulance service in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 7 March according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on ambulance services in Wales include data for January 2012. The latest release, which has been revised to reflect the NHS Wales Annual Quality Framework 2011-12, updates the statistics previously released on 1 February.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • there were almost 34,000 emergency calls, and of these, just over 13,000 were Category A (immediately life-threatening) calls;
  • 69.1% (8,859) emergency responses to Category A (immediately life-threatening) calls arrived at the scene within 8 minutes, above the all-Wales target of 65%; and
  • the 65% all-Wales target has been achieved in 11 of the last 12 months – only missed in December 2011 when the ambulance service changes were being implemented.

There have been changes to the ambulance services in Wales from 5 December 2011 to comply with the National Ambulance Performance Standards and focus the ambulance service more on improved clinical outcomes for patients. For details on the changes, please see the notes in the release.

As a result of these changes, users should note that data for December 2011 onwards will not be directly comparable with data for earlier months.
