The latest statistics on General Medical Practitioners in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 21 March 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics include data on practitioners in post on 30 September 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 22 March 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of practitioners in Wales (excluding registrars, retainers and locums) was 2,022 on 30 September 2011, 31 (1.6 per cent) more than the previous year and an increase of 215 (11.9 per cent) since 2001.
  • In 2011 there were 483 GP partnerships in Wales, 34 (6.6 per cent) fewer than in 2001.
  • Since 2001 the number of registered patients per practitioner, based on the number of practitioners, has fallen from 1,665 to 1,564 (6.1 per cent).
  • The age distribution has also changed since 2001. The workforce continues its trend to become older. Fewer practitioners are aged under 45 (893 to 800) while more are aged 55 or over (308 to 468).
