The latest National Statistics on teenage conceptions produced by the Welsh Government were released on 27 March 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on teenage conceptions include data for England and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 November 2011.  Following a review of conception statistics, ONS now only publish annual figures once a year in February/March rather than twice a year. This means that the timetable for this statistical bulletin has also changed and we will publish annually in February/March rather than in the autumn.

The key points from the bulletin are:

  • Teenage conception rates have generally been falling over recent years in Wales; rates:
  • for girls aged under 16 fell slowly from around 11 per thousand girls aged 13-15 in the late 1990s but increased slightly from 7.3 in 2009 to 7.8 in 2010;
  • for girls aged under 18 fell from 40.1 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in 2009 to 37.7 in 2010, the lowest rate recorded since 1992;
  • for women aged under 20 fell from 61.0 per thousand females aged 15-19 in 2009 to 56.2 in 2010.
  • Within Wales, rates for girls aged under 18 varied considerably from 59.8 per thousand girls aged 15-17 in Merthyr Tydfil to 23.8 in Monmouthshire (2008-2010 average).
  • 45 per cent of conceptions for the under 18s were terminated by abortion and 20 per cent at all ages.
