Prescriptions Dispensed in the Community, 2011

The latest statistics on prescriptions dispensed in the community in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 28 March 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics include data up to the calendar year 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 30 March 2011.

In Wales in 2011:

  • The number of prescription items dispensed in the community increased from 69.8 million in 2010 to 72.2 million (up by 3.4 per cent), equivalent to 24 items per head.
  • The net ingredient cost of all prescriptions dispensed in the community has decreased by 0.2 per cent since 2010, to £ 587.8 million.
  • The average net ingredient cost per item was £8.14, a 29p decrease from the 2010 figure.
  • Drugs for the treatment of the cardiovascular system make up the largest group in terms of prescription items but drugs for the treatment of the central nervous system make up the largest group in terms of cost.
