Staff Directly Employed by the NHS, 30 September 2011

The latest statistics on directly employed NHS staff produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 March 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics include data on staff in post on 30 September 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 March 2011.

Between 2010 and 2011 (in terms of whole-time equivalent numbers):

  • Directly employed NHS staff slightly decreased by 627 (0.9 per cent) to 71,817.
  • Medical & dental staff increased by 159 (2.8 per cent) to 5,813. Of these staff, hospital medical and dental consultants increased by 85 (4.1 per cent) to 2,172.
  • Nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff decreased by 170 (0.6 per cent) to 27,999. Of these staff:
  • Qualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff decreased by 90 (0.4 per cent) to 21,733.
  • Unqualified nursing, midwifery and health visiting staff decreased by 80 (1.3 per cent) to 6,266.
  • Scientific, therapeutic & technical staff decreased by 33 (0.3 per cent) to 11,450.
  • Administration & estates staff decreased by 273 (1.8 per cent) to 15,230. Of these staff, managers decreased by 250 (10.7 per cent) to 2,092.
  • Other staff (including healthcare assistants, support staff and ambulance staff) decreased by 310 (2.7 per cent) to 11,326.
