The latest National Statistics on the combined health lifestyle behaviours of adults produced by the Welsh Government were released on 22nd May 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website These statistics on the combined health lifestyle behaviours of adults are based on data from the Welsh Health Survey for 2009 and 2010 combined.

The Welsh Health Survey includes information about four key health-related lifestyles:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Fruit and vegetable consumption
  • Physical activity

To date, these health behaviours have been studied individually, however this analysis explores adults’ overall behaviour for these four lifestyles combined, including the extent to which adults follow a completely healthy lifestyle, and the extent to which they have multiple health risk behaviours.

Key points

In 2009 and 2010:

  • 6 per cent of adults reported having all four healthy lifestyle behaviours (not smoking, not drinking above guidelines, eating five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day, and doing at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on at least five days a week).
  • 23 per cent of adults reported having just one unhealthy behaviour, and the remaining 71 per cent of adults reported having multiple unhealthy behaviours, including 6 per cent who reported all four unhealthy behaviours.
  • Adults living in the most deprived areas were more likely to report having all four unhealthy behaviours than those in the least deprived areas.
  • Adults who reported having a higher number of healthy behaviours also reported better mental health and wellbeing, and were less likely to report having fair or poor health.

Note that initial headline results from the 2011 Welsh Health Survey were also published on 22nd May 2012.
