NHS Direct in Wales Update, Quarter Ending June 2012

The latest statistics on calls to NHS Direct Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 1 August 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS Direct Wales include data for Wales for the quarter up to the end of March 2012.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 2 May 2012.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • 85,400 calls were made to NHS Direct Wales, of which 71,150 (83%) were to the main 0845 number;
  • 65,000 calls were answered by NHS Direct Wales, of which 57,600 (89%) were on the main 0845 number;
  • almost 8,400 calls were transferred to NHS Direct Wales, from the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, for clinical triage;
  • 838 calls were answered (out of 1,248 made) from callers expressing a preference for the call to be taken in Welsh (around 1.5% of all calls answered);
  • More than 376,000 visits were made to the NHS Direct Wales website, more than double the number in the April to June quarter in 2011; and
  • 803 on-line enquiries were made to the web-based enquiry service, 13% down on the number (927) in the April to June quarter in 2011.
