The latest provisional National Statistics on referral to treatment times produced by the Welsh Government were released on 9 August 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The latest release includes data for the period up to the end of June 2012 and updates the statistics previously released on 12 July 2012.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • By the end of June, a total of 404,075 patients were waiting for the start of their treatment. Of those patients waiting for their treatment, 93.0 per cent had been waiting less than 26 weeks and 99.3 per cent had been waiting less than 36 weeks from the date the referral letter was received in the hospital.
  • A total of 78,623 patients were treated during June. Of those patients, 81.9 per cent were treated within 26 weeks and 96.7 per cent were treated within 36 weeks of the date the referral letter was received in the hospital.

Information on specialties not covered by referral to treatment times reporting is also presented in the release.

Statistics on a range of waiting times in the NHS in Wales are now published together. ‘NHS Wales Diagnostic and Therapy Services waiting times: End June 2012’ is also published today.

The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:

  • meet identified user needs;
  • are well explained and readily accessible;
  • are produced according to sound methods, and
  • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest.

Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.
