The latest National Statistics on social services for children produced by the Welsh Government were released on 4 September 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on referrals, assessments and social services for children include data for Wales for the period up to the end of March 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 7 September 2011.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • Local authorities received just over 45,900 (rounded to the nearest hundred) referrals during the year. 30 per cent of referrals were for children who had previously been referred to the same local authority compared to 29 per cent in the previous year.
  • Nearly 27,400 initial assessments were completed. 69 per cent were carried out within 7 working days of referral compared to 67 per cent in the previous year.
  • Almost three-quarters (73 per cent) of required core assessments were completed within 35 working days of identifying the need for an in-depth assessment, compared with 65 per cent in 2010-11.  The number of core assessments completed continued to increase with just over 10,300 completed in 2011-12 compared to 8,900 in 2010-11.
  • Just under 2,900 children were registered on local authority Child Protection Registers (CPRs) at 31 March 2012. 31 per cent of children had been on CPRs for less than 3 months, while 19 per cent of children had been on registers for more than 12 months.
