The latest statistics on GP Referrals produced by the Welsh Government were released on 5 September 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on GP Referrals received at Welsh Local Health Boards for a first outpatient appointment include data for Wales for the period July 2010 to July 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 1 August 2012.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of GP referrals for a first outpatient appointment received at a Welsh Local Health Board was 67,158 in July 2012;
  • This is a 6.9% increase compared with July 2011 and a 16.5% increase compared with June 2012, at an all Wales level.

All figures relating to July 2012 are provisional.

For the August 2012 data onwards, the data source for GP referrals for first outpatient appointments in this release is changing from the aggregate GP referrals data collection to the Outpatient Referrals Data Set. We are also going to be using a more suitable data item to determine into which specialty the GP referral is made, this is detailed on Page 3 of the Notes in the Release.  If you have any comments on this approach, then please let us know via the contact details below.  For more details, see the Notes pages in the release.
