This report, which was published on 19 September 2012, uses data from the Welsh Health Survey to describe trends in health related lifestyle among adults in Wales. The paper covers smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and obesity.

The report was produced on behalf of the Welsh Government by NatCen Social Research, who carry out the Welsh Health Survey on behalf of the Welsh Government.

The key points from the report are:

  • The percentage of adults who reported smoking has decreased from 26% in 2003/04 to 23% in 2011.
  • There has been little change in the overall rates of adults who report drinking above guidelines or binge drinking since 2008.
  • Since 2008, there has been a slight decrease in the percentage of adults who reported eating five or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
  • Obesity rates have increased from 18% in 2003/04 to 22% in 2011, although rates appear to be rising more slowly since 2007.
  • Physical activity levels have remained relatively stable between 2003/04 and 2011.
