The latest National Statistics on social services staff produced by the Welsh Government were released on 24 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The statistics include numbers of social services staff employed by local authorities in Wales at 31 March 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 12 October 2011.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • 24,700 (rounded to the nearest hundred) staff are directly employed by social services departments, comprising 13,700 (56 per cent) part-time staff and 11,000 (44 per cent) full-time staff.
  • The whole-time equivalent (WTE) number of directly employed staff decreased by 874 from 31 March 2011 and now stands at 18,700 (its lowest level since 2005).
  • 15,400 (66 per cent) of staff held a required or recommended qualification.
  • 4,300 (18 per cent) of the total number of staff were Welsh speaking.
