The latest statistics on patients in mental health hospitals and units in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 24 October 2012.

Statistics include data as at 31 March 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 October 2011.

At 31 March 2012:

Hospitals and units for people with a mental illness in Wales:

  • there were 1,643 resident patients on 31 March 2012;
  • the number of patients had fallen by 539 (25%) since 31 March 2002 and by 121 since 31 March 2011;
  • 789 patients (48%) had been resident for less than 3 months on 31 March 2012;
  • 522 patients (32 per cent) were detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation on 31 March 2012 compared with 464 patients (21%) on 31 March 2002;
  • there were fewer female patients (779) than males (864) on 31 March 2012 and they tended to be older (61% of female patients were aged 65 or over compared with 40% of males).

Hospitals and units for people with a learning disability in Wales:

  • there were 133 resident patients on 31 March 2012, 90 males and 43 females;
  • this is 15 more than on 31 March 2011, but 145 (52%) fewer than on 31 March 2002;
  • 32 patients (24% of the total) were detained under the Mental Heath Act 1983 and other legislation, an increase of 1 from 31 March 2011, and 8 higher than on 31 March 2002; and
  • 68 patients (51%) had been resident for 2 years or more at 31 March 2012.
