The latest National Statistics on Community Pharmacy Services in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 30 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics include the number of pharmacies, prescriptions dispensed and pharmaceutical services offered in Wales for the period up to the end of March 2012.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 October 2011.

Key Results for 2011-12:

  • There were 710 community pharmacies in Wales on 31 March 2012, up 2 from 708 on 31 March 2011, although in general the total number changes little from year to year;
  • there were 5 appliance contractors in Wales on 31 March 2012;
  • 2 community pharmacies opened during the year, and none closed.

Essential services:

  • 67.6 million prescription items were dispensed by community pharmacies in 2011-12, up by 3.7% from 2010-11.

Advanced services:

  • 93.5% of pharmacies were accredited to provide Medicine Use Review services and 89.2% a Discharge Medicines Review service in 2011-12.

Enhanced services:

  • The proportion of community pharmacies accredited to provide various enhanced services has risen steadily since 2005-06.
