The latest statistics on NHS beds and their use produced by the Welsh Government were released on 31 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on NHS beds include data for the period up to the end of March 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 October 2011.

The release presents data at Wales and Local Health Board (LHB) level. Due to the need for further checking of the allocation of beds between specialties at one LHB for 2011-12, the release contains initial ‘headline’ statistics, but does not include any specialty breakdowns.

When the queries around specialties have been resolved with the relevant LHB, we will publish a supplementary release as soon as practicable, providing the specialty breakdown. At the same time, the detailed tables will be made available in StatsWales.

Between 2010-11 and 2011-12:

  • The total number of NHS beds (1) fell by 368 (3 per cent) to 11,781.
  • The percentage occupancy increased from 84.7 to 85.7 per cent.

Over the ten years from 2001-02 to 2011-12:

  • The total number of NHS beds(1) fell by 2,653 (18 per cent).
  • The percentage occupancy increased from 81.2 to 85.7 per cent.
  • Annual throughput (number of patients treated per bed) increased from 35.3 to 43.3.
  • The average duration of stay decreased from 8.4 to 7.2 days.

Revision note

Note added 28 March 2013: There have been some minor revisions to 2009-10 and 2011-12 data since the release (SDR 189/2012 “NHS Beds, 2011-12”) was initially published. Data in SDR 189/2012 does not show the revisions that have been made. Please see SDR 49/2013 “Additional Data on NHS Beds, 2011-12” for the revised 2009-10 and 2011-12 data, information on why the revisions have been made and their impact. The 2009-10 beds data in StatsWales has been updated to show the revised data and StatsWales also now contains the detailed 2011-12 revised data.
