The latest statistics on sickness absence in the NHS produced by the Welsh Government were released on 14 November 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on sickness absence include Welsh data for the period up to the end of June 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 August 2012.

Key results for the quarter ending June 2012

  • The sickness absence rate was 5.1 per cent, higher than the 4.7 per cent for the same period in 2011.
  • Of the 7 Local Health Boards and 3 NHS Trusts, the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust had the highest sickness absence rate (6.7 per cent) and Public Health Wales NHS Trust had the lowest rate (3.1 per cent).
  • Of the 6 staff groups, the highest sickness absence rates were in the healthcare assistant and support worker staff group and the ambulance staff group (7.2 per cent).
  • The lowest sickness absence rate was in the medical and dental staff group (1.5 per cent).
