This Release presents information collected from local authorities about their actions under the homelessness legislation for the period July to September 2004, together with comparisons with figures for earlier periods.

UK Statistics Authority Website The key results for the July to September quarter 2004 show:

  • There were 2,614 households accepted as homeless. 1,202 acceptances (46 per cent of the total) were because of dependent children or because someone in the household was pregnant. 353 were households subject to domestic violence or the threat of violence, 279 were vulnerable young people aged 16 or 17, and 203 were former prisoners.
  • There were 64 acceptances from black and minority ethnic (BME) applicants, around 2 per cent of all acceptances.
  • There were 191 female single parents reported as becoming homeless because of violence from former partners.
  • There were 3,619 households in temporary accommodation at the end of September 2004. 20 per cent were living in self-contained properties and 35 per cent in hostels, refuges and bed and breakfast.
  • Of the 875 households in Bed and Breakfast accommodation, 252 were families with children.
