This Statistical Release presents information on the number of new dwellings started and completed in Wales up to the end of December 2005 as reported by local authorities. This information is based on the reports of local authority building inspectors and does not include information from private approved inspectors.

Starts

  • There were 1,807 new dwellings started during the October to December quarter 2005, a decrease of around 580 from the previous quarter and nearly 410 less than the same quarter the previous year.
  • The private sector accounted for 1,683 of new dwellings started, some 93 per cent of all activity. The remaining 124 dwellings were started by Registered Social Landlords. There were no new dwellings started by local authorities during the quarter.

Completions

  • There were 2,165 dwellings completed during the October to December quarter 2005, an increase of around 210 from the previous quarter but around 380 less than the same quarter a year earlier.
  • There were 2,085 dwellings (96 per cent) completed by the private sector. The remaining 80 dwellings were completed by Registered Social Landlords. There were no local authority completions during this quarter.
