The latest National Statistics on Household Estimates produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 18 August 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Household Estimates include data for Wales for the period 1991 to 2007. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 14 March 2006.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Between 1991 and 2007 the total number of households in Wales grew by 15 per cent to nearly 1.3 million by 2007.
  • The average household size in Wales decreased from 2.52 persons in 1991 to 2.28 persons in 2007.
  • Single parent households, of all types, more than doubled from 48,000 to around 99,000 by 2007.
  • Overall numbers of households with 4 or more persons decreased by 16 per cent from 271,000 in 1991 to 228,000 in 2007.
  • The number of households increased for all local authorities in Wales between 1991 and 2007, varying between 4 per cent in Merthyr Tydfil to 26 per cent in Powys.
