The latest National Statistics on Homelessness produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 23rd September 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Homelessness in Wales include data for the quarter April to June 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 24th June 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In general the number of households accepted as homeless have fallen since the end of 2003-04. Whilst the numbers have increased slightly over the last 2 quarters the overall downward trend has continued with 1,337 households accepted as homeless during April to June 2009. This is a fall of 15 per cent on the same period last year.
  • Following a peak in mid 2005, the use of temporary accommodation has generally been falling. At the end of June 2009 there were 2,749 households in temporary accommodation which is down by 4 per cent from the end of June 2008.
  • The use of temporary bed and breakfast accommodation has decreased sharply since mid 2004 though numbers did increase slightly during most of 2008 before falling again between October 2008 and March 2009.  Latest figures however show a slight increase on the previous quarter with a total of 275 households in bed and breakfast accommodation  at the end of June 2009.
  • The number of families with children in Bed and Breakfast accommodation continues to fall accounting for only 5 per cent of all households in B&B accommodation by the end of June 2009.   This compares with 13 per cent at the end of June 2008.
