The latest statistics on the number of Gypsy and Traveller caravans in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 24th November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on on the number of Gypsy and Traveller caravans in Wales on both authorised and unauthorised sites include data for 16th July 2009. The latest release updatess the statistics previously released on 27th May 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The July 2009 Count showed that there were 767 Gypsy and Traveller caravans in the 20 local authorities that responded Wales.
  • In total there were 73 sites reported across Wales, giving an average of 10.5 caravans per site.

Authorised sites:

  • There were 597 caravans on authorised sites with planning permission, accounting for 78 per cent of all caravans.

Unauthorised sites:

  • There were 69 caravans on unauthorised sites, on land owned by Gypsies, accounting for 9 per cent of all caravans.
  • A further 101 caravans (13 per cent) were on unauthorised sites, on land not owned by Gypsies.

Gypsy Sites provided by Local Authorities:

  • There were a total of 356 pitches on Gypsy sites provided by local authorities in Wales on 16th July 2009.
