The latest National Statistics on Private Sector Renewal activity 2008-09 produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 9 December 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Private Sector Renewal Activity in Wales include data for the year 2008-09.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 February 2009.

The key points from the 2008-09 release show:

  • Annual expenditure by local authorities on providing help to private owners and to tenants in their area for home improvement and repair continued to decrease.
  • Overall, local authorities in Wales spent almost £64 million during 2008-09, a decrease of 5 per cent on the £67million spent during 2007-08 and 39 per cent less than the £104 million spent in 2006-07.
  • Over half of this, some £34.4 million, was expenditure on Mandatory Disabled Facilities grants (DFGs) under the 1996 Act. The remaining £29.1 million (46 per cent) of expenditure covered activity under the 2002 Order.
  • Expenditure on Mandatory DFGs also continued to decrease during 2008-09 dropping by 7 per cent from the £37 million (r) spent during 2007-08 and by 15 per cent from the £40.5 million spent during 2006-07.
  • There were 34 Renewal areas in operation during 2008-09 covering around 43,600 dwellings. Local authorities spent £28.4 million on these areas during 2008-09, a decrease of 10 per cent from the  2007-08 figure of £31.6 million (r).
