The latest National Statistics on Homelessness produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 13th January 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Homelessness in Wales include data for the quarter July to September 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 23rd September 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In general the number of households accepted as homeless have fallen since the end of 2003-04, with 1,475 households accepted as homeless during July to September 2009. This is a fall of 3 per cent on the same period last year.
  • Following a peak in mid 2005, the use of temporary accommodation has generally been falling. At the end of September 2009 there were 2,567 households in temporary accommodation which is down by 13 per cent from the end of September 2008.
  • Following a sharp decrease since mid 2004, the use of B&B accommodation increased slightly for the best part of 2008, but has generally fallen since October 2008. Latest figures however show a decrease of 30 per cent on the same period a year earlier, with a total of 232 households in bed and breakfast accommodation at the end of September 2009.
  • The number of families with children in Bed and Breakfast accommodation continues to fall accounting for only 3 per cent of all households in B&B accommodation by the end of September 2009. This compares with 15 per cent at the end of September 2008.
