The latest National Statistics report on Household Projections produced by the Welsh Assembly Government was released on 16 February 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Household Projections include data for Wales for the period 2006 to 2031.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of households is projected to grow for all authorities in Wales to nearly 1.6 million by 2031. Increases are projected to vary between 10 per cent in Merthyr Tydfil to 36 per cent in Carmarthenshire.
  • On average, the total number of households in Wales is projected to increase by 0.9 per cent per year between 2006 and 2031.
  • By 2031 one person households are projected to become the most common household type for all authorities in Wales.
  • Average household size for Wales as a whole is projected to decrease to 2.03 persons by 2031. For some authorities average household size is projected to decrease below 2 persons over the projection period.
